First timer personal hydration system questions: How much water should one carry when out and about on the playa? I’ve heard that the amount of water you have means that you wander farther afield from your camp. The packs I’ve seen vary from 1.5 to 3 liters. 3 liters is over 6 1/2 lbs., which seems like a lot. I don’t really want to carry a big haunching backpack, but I suppose I’ll need some cargo space as my planned outfits aren’t big on pockets. I’ve been looking at Camelbaks online and am a little at sea. Feedback from experienced burners would be appreciated.

    • Brigham, I carried a 2-liter Camelback all the time and supplemented that with liquids from the camps I stopped at. If possible, I tried to refill it before going out for the evening. I ran out only once. If there’s one thing not to skimp on, it’s access to water. Remember that the pack will get lighter as you drink, so it’s only heavy in the morning.

      Cheers,
      Spidey
